C. Keep the Hall of Fame within the reach for coaches:
Coaches deserve Hall of Fame recognition for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is their continuing contribution to the needs of young athletes. Outstanding won-loss records create interesting newspaper copy, but a lifetime of genuine concern for student athletes creates values, self-esteem, and a sense of commitment in future generations. We are quick to recognize winning programs, and thus continually reemphasize the importance of winning. This can confirm in the minds of young athletes the already blatant expectation that the only genuine satisfaction of athletic participation is “beating the other person.” Sometimes, the values of participation and the joy of developing a “Will to Win” are lost in a preoccupation with winning. Coaches who promote such expectations, no matter how successful their teams, do little to foster positive social and personal values in their athletes. Coaches who devote their lives to student athletes and to the good of the community should receive Hall of Fame recognition. They are the unsung heroes who profoundly influence young people and make genuine contributions to their schools and communities. They too, deserve nominations for Hall of Fame recognition. The Hall of Fame may not recognize them as readily as it will winning coaches, but by nominating them, you have affirmed to the individual coach and to everyone in the community, the athlete values that have meaning other than winning.
